Anambra Flood: Tricycle Operator Swept Away While Trying to Rescue Woman in Awka
AWKA, ANAMBRA — A tricycle operator has reportedly lost his life after being swept away by floodwater while attempting to rescue a woman trapped in a flooded area of Awka, Anambra State.
The incident occurred around Miracle Junction along Ifite Road in Awka South Local Government Area, following a heavy downpour that caused significant flooding in parts of the city.
According to reports, the tricycle operator noticed the woman in distress and attempted to assist her. However, the floodwater became too strong, sweeping him away in the process.
His body was reportedly recovered on Tuesday morning from a flood channel around the Book Foundation area. The woman he was attempting to rescue, however, was still reported missing at the time the incident was reported.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the dangers posed by rapidly rising floodwater, particularly in areas where drainage channels and waterways can become difficult to navigate during intense rainfall.
The heavy downpour also reportedly caused damage in other parts of Anambra. In Awka and surrounding communities, strong winds accompanying the rainfall were said to have damaged roofs and walls, while a filling-station roof reportedly collapsed onto a shuttle bus in Nawfia.
The latest incident adds to growing concerns about the impact of severe rainfall and flooding on communities across the state, particularly as residents continue to face the risks associated with blocked or overwhelmed drainage systems.
Residents are advised to exercise caution during heavy rainfall, avoid attempting to cross fast-moving floodwater and stay away from flooded drainage channels and other potentially dangerous areas.
