NAFDAC Seizes Counterfeit Alcohol Packaging Materials Worth Over ₦200 Million in Aba Raid

The operation targeted five shops at Old Court Road Market, where officials recovered fake labels, corks and packaging materials bearing the names of popular brands.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has seized counterfeit packaging materials estimated to be worth more than ₦200 million during an enforcement operation at Old Court Road Market in Aba, Abia State.

The operation, which targeted five shops suspected of producing and supplying counterfeit packaging materials, followed intelligence received by the agency concerning alleged counterfeiting activities in the market.

According to NAFDAC, the materials recovered included fake labels, corks, packs and outer packaging bearing the names of several established brands. The agency said the items could be used to package products in ways that make counterfeit goods appear genuine.

Among the brand names found on the materials were Jameson, Glenfiddich, Four Cousins, Lord’s Dry Gin, Imperial Blue, Goya Oil, Chelsea, Squadron and Seaman’s Aromatic Schnapps.

The seizure highlights concerns about the potential use of counterfeit packaging to deceive consumers and undermine efforts to keep fake or substandard products out of the market.

Traders Resisted Evacuation of Seized Materials

NAFDAC disclosed that its Investigation and Enforcement operatives encountered threats and resistance from traders during the operation, making it difficult to remove the seized materials from the premises.

The owners of the five shops were reportedly absent when the officials conducted the raid. The agency subsequently placed the affected premises under seal to prevent interference with the materials left inside.

NAFDAC also invited the chairman of the market union, who pledged to help secure the sealed shops and assist the agency in identifying and presenting their owners.

The agency has not publicly identified the shop owners in the reports reviewed, and no arrests in connection with the Aba operation were confirmed in those reports.

Concerns Over Counterfeit Products

Counterfeit packaging remains a concern for regulators because it can make it difficult for consumers to distinguish genuine products from imitations.

When packaging bearing a recognised brand name is used to disguise a product’s true identity or origin, buyers may have little reason to suspect that what they are purchasing is not authentic.

In the case of alcoholic beverages, counterfeit products can pose serious health risks when their contents, ingredients or production conditions are unknown. However, the seizure of packaging materials alone does not establish that finished counterfeit drinks were recovered during this particular operation.

NAFDAC’s action in Aba is part of broader efforts to tackle suspected counterfeiting and the circulation of potentially unsafe consumer products in Nigeria.

Further investigation will be important in establishing who owned the seized materials, how they were intended to be used and whether they were connected to the production or distribution of counterfeit products.

The operation also underscores the importance of cooperation between regulators, market leaders and traders in addressing suspected illegal activities and protecting consumers.
