Rangers, Abia Warriors Set For Oriental Derby Showdown In Awka

Rangers International will put their position at the top of the NPFL table on the line today as they face South-East rivals Abia Warriors in a Matchday 7 Oriental Derby at the Awka Township Stadium.
The highly anticipated clash brings together two sides heading into the encounter with renewed confidence, with Rangers looking to maintain their strong start to the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League season while Abia Warriors aim to build on their recent improvement.
Rangers moved to the summit after securing a 1-0 victory over Warri Wolves in their rescheduled midweek fixture. The result helped the reigning champions respond positively after their previous 2-0 defeat to Ikorodu City.
Abia Warriors, meanwhile, go into the derby after recording their first home victory of the campaign, beating Bendel Insurance 3-0 in their last league outing.
The two South-East clubs have produced closely fought encounters in recent seasons. Rangers have the better recent head-to-head record, winning three of their last five meetings, while Abia Warriors have one victory and one draw during that period.
Rangers Seeking To Protect Top Spot
The Flying Antelopes enter the fixture with 13 points from six matches, having recorded four wins, one draw and one defeat.
Their immediate objective will be to collect another three points and keep their place at the top of the table as the early-season title race begins to take shape.
The club will also be playing away from its traditional Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, which is undergoing renovation. Rangers have already used the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta and Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri during the season before moving today’s home fixture to Awka.
Abia Warriors Looking To End Away Drought
For Abia Warriors, the derby provides an opportunity to claim a major away victory against their regional rivals.
The Umuahia-based side last defeated Rangers away in the league in January 2023. Since then, their subsequent visits have produced three defeats and one draw.
Their recent 3-0 win over Bendel Insurance, however, could give the Warriors added confidence as they attempt to upset the league leaders.
A Battle For Points And Bragging Rights
Beyond the league points, today’s encounter carries the usual local bragging rights associated with an Oriental Derby.
Rangers will be determined to protect their position at the summit, while Abia Warriors have the chance to announce themselves with a statement victory against the defending champions.
The match is scheduled for 4:00pm today at the Awka Township Stadium.
With Rangers chasing another win and Abia Warriors looking to continue their revival, the South-East derby promises to be one of the major attractions of Matchday 7.
