Ronaldo Leaves Portugal Camp Amid Tension Over Jorge Jesus’ Selection Decision

Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s national team camp in Copenhagen ahead of Thursday’s Nations League clash with Denmark, following fresh tension surrounding his situation under head coach Jorge Jesus.
The 41-year-old forward had been left on the bench for Portugal’s 2–1 victory over Norway on Sunday and did not make an appearance during the match.
Ronaldo subsequently trained separately in the gym for the next two days, despite not being injured. Coach Jorge Jesus later denied that the player had refused to train and insisted there was no major conflict between them.
However, during a press conference on Wednesday, Jesus confirmed that Ronaldo would not start against Denmark.
Shortly afterwards, Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp.
In a statement shared on social media, Ronaldo said he made the decision after the coach’s press conference and following a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença.
He said he would explain the reasons behind his decision “in due course” and wished Portugal and his teammates good luck.
The Portuguese Football Federation subsequently confirmed that Ronaldo had left the camp, adding that preparations for the upcoming matches would continue with the remaining 24 players.
Ronaldo’s departure has raised fresh questions about his immediate future with the Portuguese national team, although he has not announced his retirement from international football.
Ronaldo remains Portugal’s record international goalscorer with 146 goals and the country’s most-capped player with 234 appearances.
