Enugu Monarch, Ex-Lawmaker, Eight Others Arrested Over Alleged NDC Meeting Attack

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested an Enugu traditional ruler, Igwe Obiora Igwesi, his brother and former member of the House of Representatives, U.S.A. Igwesi, and eight others over an alleged armed attack on members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu State.

The suspects were reportedly arrested by detectives from Zone 13 Command, Ukpo, Anambra State, following a directive from the Inspector-General of Police to track down those allegedly responsible for the attack on an NDC ward meeting in Obuoffia, Nkanu West Local Government Area.

The arrests followed a petition dated September 15, 2026, submitted to the Inspector-General of Police by Chief G. Tagbo Ike, SAN, on behalf of the NDC Obuoffia Ward leadership.

Those arrested alongside the Igwesi brothers were identified as Uchenna Moses Ani, also known as Odogwu; Chidi Ani; Oko Nwodo, also known as Buzuzu; Dominic Arum, known as City Hangout; Ifeanyi Solomon Nwobodo, known as Agege; Victor Okechukwu, known as Ogboni; Nnabuike Ani, known as Stone; and John Chukwuma Ogbodo.

Police sources said the suspects were being interrogated over allegations including conspiracy to commit felony, unlawful possession of firearms, attempted murder, assault occasioning grievous harm, threatening violence and stealing.

According to the petition, the incident occurred on September 12, 2026, when an armed group allegedly invaded an NDC ward meeting at Ihuani Awkunanaw, described as the home ward of the party’s governorship candidate.

The petition stated that the organisers had obtained prior clearance from the Divisional Police Station in Agbani before the meeting.

It alleged that three cars and two motorcycles drove through the venue while party members were gathered along both sides of the access road. The petition further alleged that Obiora and U.S.A. Igwesi were among those in one of the vehicles and allegedly issued threats before gunshots were fired.

Several people were reportedly injured during the incident, prompting party members and sympathisers to flee. The injured victims were subsequently taken to hospital.

The petition identified eight alleged victims as Donald Onovo, a local government ward councillor; Maduka Ngene, the ward chairman; Victor Onovo; Gloria Ogbodo; Maduabuchi Ugwu; Nelson Nnaemeka; Chinonso Nwagbara; and Obinna Daniel Owo.

The petition also alleged that Uchenna Moses Ani forcefully took ₦600,000 meant for logistics and transportation from Onovo during the incident, while equipment hired from vendors was allegedly destroyed.

The victims’ legal representatives further alleged that the incident was part of a wider pattern of violence against opposition activities in Enugu State. They claimed that some local government areas had witnessed coordinated attacks allegedly aimed at suppressing opposition activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

However, these wider allegations have not been independently verified.

The police investigation is ongoing, while the suspects remain under interrogation as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack and the roles of those arrested.

This report is based on information contained in the police-related petition and reports from the investigation. The allegations against the suspects have not been established in court.
