FIFA, CAF Assess Nigeria Football Reforms as Sam Sodje Calls for Key Changes
Former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje has called for major improvements in Nigerian football as FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) continue assessing the country’s football governance and proposed reforms.
Sodje identified three areas he believes should receive attention: football infrastructure, a clear pathway for developing young talents and improved welfare for players.
His comments come after a two-day FIFA and CAF assessment mission in Nigeria, during which the football governing bodies held consultations with stakeholders over the future administration and development of Nigerian football. The mission ended after meetings with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), State Football Associations, league bodies, players, coaches, referees and other stakeholders.
According to Sodje, better infrastructure is needed to support football development from the grassroots level through to the professional game. He also called for a clearer system that would allow talented young players to progress from youth football into the senior national teams.
Player welfare was the third area highlighted by the former Nigeria international, who said footballers should receive greater attention in any reform process.
The FIFA/CAF assessment follows the leadership crisis within the NFF after the resignation of former president Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and other members of the federation’s leadership.
FIFA and CAF are expected to review the findings from their consultations before determining the next steps regarding reforms to Nigerian football. The National Sports Commission has said the outcome of the assessment will help shape the roadmap for the federation.
With different stakeholders presenting their views on how the NFF should be restructured, discussions are continuing over the appropriate path for restoring stability and strengthening the administration of Nigerian football.
