Mother, Children Die as Fire Guts House in Rivers Community

A tragic fire outbreak in Okochiri community, Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State, has claimed the lives of a mother and her children.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, September 18, 2026, when fire engulfed the family’s residence.

Community youths reportedly moved to the scene and succeeded in putting out the fire before the police arrived. However, the victims were found dead after the blaze was brought under control.

The Commander of the Civilian Joint Task Force in Okrika LGA, Igwe Godswill, confirmed the incident and said details surrounding the tragedy were still sketchy.

According to Godswill, he and his team arrived at the scene after receiving information about the fire and found the bodies of the victims.

The exact cause of the fire has not been established. Some community sources suggested that petrol may have ignited after a spark while it was being transferred into a container, but this account has not been independently confirmed.

Channels Television reported that the Rivers State Police Command was also informed about the incident, with the command’s spokesperson, Blessing Agabe, confirming that a fire had occurred.

However, reports have differed slightly on the number of children who died in the incident. Community and Civilian JTF accounts put the death toll at five people — the mother and four children, while a later account attributed to the police referred to the deaths of a mother and three children, with other occupants reportedly injured.

Police investigations are expected to establish the exact circumstances of the fire and determine its cause.

The incident has left residents of Okochiri mourning, as authorities continue efforts to piece together what happened before the fire broke out.
